1. Tell me a little bit about yourself.
My name is Norman Anderson, and I was born into a loving Norwegian and Swedish home in Ketchikan, Alaska. Lived my early and young adult years in Golden, Colorado. As a young man I was fascinated by architecture and drawing, and spent many hours and days drafting intricate and fantastic spaces.
2. When did you start styling hair? Why?
I started doing hair professionally at the end of 2010. I considered doing hair professionally after I moved to NYC to be with my partner Nicholas in 2002. But it wasn't until we moved to San Diego in 2007 that I actually got busy getting my license in Cosmetology. As I look back its no wonder I got into hair. My Partner is a hairdresser and has always encouraged me, but as well my mother and all my aunts did and do hair professionally too. I guess doing hair was in my psyche although didn't know it at first. All I knew is I enjoyed art, drawing and creative projects. As a youngster I drew and drafted detailed two-dimensional structures for days and days at a time. When I left home to go to Loyola University I studied Anthropology, English Literature as well as Theology. They were dynamic and interesting subjects. My mother and father didn't want me to take art in school so these were the subjects that stimulated me. But deep down I wanted to do something creative. I feel like that's why I eventfully went into the café, and the vintage clothing business. I was looking for a creative outlet. I eventually found that creative outlet in the hair business.
Shortly after receiving my license I was hired by Hair Drezzers on Fire. My colleagues and I get to cut, color, and style hair all day. It's an amazing occupation! Cutting, coloring, and styling hair is at its core an expression of creativity, which I feel I've been searching for since I was a boy - drafting fantastic spaces all alone in my room.
3. What is your favorite type of styling? What is your specialty?
My favorite type of styling I guess would be walking the razors edge between the past and the present. With out the past we really don't have a creative foundation upon which to build our craft. At the same time without a modern day esthetic to guide us we as hairdressers are in a creative whirlpool. We really need both the past and the present simultaneously to create something totally unique and beautiful. That's the long way of saying that I like reimagining classic looks for a modern client.
My specialty if there is such a thing is my ability to connect with my clients. I truly enjoy connecting with clients, and I get tremendous pleasure caring for their needs. I guess that's my gift. I'm extremely hard on myself. I'm my harshest critic in fact, which isn't unusual for creative people.
4. Tell me about Hair Drezzers on Fire. What makes it such a great salon?
Hair Drezzers on Fire has always been a family owned and operated salon, and a Normal Heights institution for which I'm grateful to be a part of. What makes this place so wonderful is the people. I worth with genuinely caring, and create individuals that inspire. To a creative person that means everything.
I absolutely loved Hair Drezzers on Fire! From the welcoming staff, complimentary drinks, to the beautiful modern interior I thoroughly enjoyed my salon experience. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I rarely let anyone I don't trust go near my hair with scissors. This fear come from memories of tragic haircuts past. However, after meeting with Norman for our consultation he immediately made me feel welcomed, comforted, and that my hair was in great and trustworthy hands. Norman is the sweetest, and he really did give me a killer cut that I am still loving a few weeks later! I'm already planning to go back to Norman for a much needed freshening of my ombre.
